What is the difference between a PLASMA and an LCD Tv, and which is most prefered?

Answers:    They use two different technologies.

Plasma is gas contained by a glass pane that lights up when exposed to electric current.

LCD have a backlight and the LCD screen filter that light.

There are tradeoffs next to each. Plasma displays low table lamp levels better, and the screen are tougher. Unfortunately, they are not as bright and subject to annoying glares or wahing out if within a room with bright lights or sunny window.

LCDs are brighter and in my mind, a short time sharper. They don't display low light level well, so different shades of black tend to show as lately black. However they do better in brighter rooms or around bright lights.

Plasmas tend to be cheaper than LCD.

My personal judgment is that LCDs have surpassed plasma contained by picture quality. I not long looked at the electronics superstore at a bunch of plasmas and LCDs playing the same item. Pretty much all the LCDs looked better than plasma. And the Samsung LCDs seem to be the best of all.
Warning: This is a off-putting you are not gonna get from the dealer or the manufactures. LCDs own very fragile, terribly breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because here are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. elderly Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an vacate plastic cup. The screens are plastic because they can be and it prevents the peak from being reflective. It also make them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you own children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.
Plasma hold a glass eyeshade like adjectives other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.
Plasma is better 42" or larger and contained by dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also own anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get hold of plasma.
