Having trouble viewing Standard Def channel using HDMI cable hookup on my Samsung 40" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD

I've got this expensive HDMI cable and it won't permit me see my standard def channels. The HD channel look great. Standard Def and HD channels come through using the DVI nouns, but the volume is muted slightly. Even at 100% volume, it's not loud enough. Would resembling to use the HDMI cable, but need to have a handle on how to get standard def channel as well as HD. Any help out would be appreciated. Cheers.
