Programming remote to tv?

Recently, I accidently dropped my remote for my Bell-Howell tv, which is pretty old, and some plastic or some part fell off that was located by where the batteries are put in. I was wondering, can I just buy any remote and somehow program it to my tv for it to work? Also, is there a specific code I may need to use when programming? Also, how may I program the remote if my existing remote no longer works?
Thanks!

Answer:
the best universal remotes ive seen are by Logitech. you need a pc and internet connection to use them and if you're on here...then you have them! lol.
theyre pretty cheap and work awesome! the remote downloads info from the net...all you need is to tell it the model number of your tv. write it down before you begin the procedure
I've lost and broken remotes a couple of times before and yes, you can buy a universal remote for your TV. You mentioned it was pretty old, but most manuals for universal remotes have codes for almost any brand. I don't know how old your TV is, but it would more than likely be in the remote manual. They even have codes for the more generic brands in some of the higher end remotes. You will need a specific code, and the manual will break it down by brand. It tells you the step-by-step directions in the manual on how to program it to your tv. Once you program the universal remote to your tv, you will no longer need the one that came with the tv. You may also call the manufacturer and ask them where you can buy brand specific replacement products and if they still make them. Good luck, and take care!
