Why do my DVD's and home burned movies on DVD's look choppy on my new widescreen LCD TV?

I just bought a new LCD TV. I have an upconvert DVD player but my home movies I made on DVD look like crap. The Audio isn't even in sync. I think my regular DVD's are a little choppy too. I don't have an HDMI cable. Is it a neccessity?

Answer:
Normally i would guess that your burnt DVD's were the issue. however you said that your regular DVD's also displayed some choppiness. If you have another DVD player i would try that, double check your connections and try again. Also check the setting on the LCD TV. If the regular DVD's are still 'choppy' on a different DVD player if just might be the LCD TV. I would contact the manufacture and get advice from them, (the customer support number is usually in the manual). Good luck.
hdmi cable will not solve that problem - issue is your burnt dvd's - depending on how you made them , format etc is affecting your picture
