How can I survey Local HD channel on a non HDTV?
Answers: The first two answers are incorrect; you can receive HD channels on a non-HD TV.
All of the digital (ATSC) tuners that I know of will down convert HD programing to standard definition so it can be displayed on non-HD TVs. The standard of the picture is limited by the TV to just about what you would get by playing a DVD.
Currently the non-HD TVs man manufactured for the US market own both digital (ATSC) and analog (NTSC) tuners built in to them. However, if you own an older TV, you will call for an external digital tuner to receive HD programing.
The simplest way to do this is to dawdle until Jan 2008 when the government will start giving away $40 discount coupons to buy these digital converter boxes. The price (after the coupon is expected to be almost $20.
Alternatively you could buy a DVD recorder with an ATSC tuner built within to it. These start at about $145. There are also TV tuners that you can buy for computers. If you couple one of these next to the proper video card, you can hook it up to your TV.
The concept of a "HD antenna" is just a marketing gimmick; at hand is no difference between a analog TV antenna and a "HD antenna".
Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = "Analog TV"
New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = "Digital TV" = DTV
OTA = "Over the Air" = stuff you get through your TV antenna
