How come when I use the HDMI cable I return with black lines on top and bottom of picture?

I tried to have the TV construct it full screen, but later it stretches it.

I don't want it stretched, makes family look weird

Is that ordinary to have black lines, my TV is widescreen, so I don't know why I would acquire black lines

Answers:    Depends on how wide are those black lines.
If they are a few pixels wide-ranging, then
your TV most probably does not overscan contained by HDMI mode so you see the extra lines.
Check if your TV is in 1:1 mode (or pixel to pixel). If yes, switch to 16:9, it will make a payment a little bit of overscan so you can't see those lines.

If the lines are highly wide, afterwards the source (DVD movie) was record in a ratio different from 16:9. This is NORMAL. movies are created contained by a variety of x:y ratio.
The lines arise from incompatible picture geometry between the video source and the television set. The set will own a control which will let you select the best geometry for the picture man viewed. This may redeploy depending on whether the video source is 4:3, 16:9, or letterboxed or not.
