What produces better picture part 1080i or 720p?
Answers: Most of the answers here are simplistic and, frankly, wrong.
The answer is ... It depends.
There are many variables here .. and results are primarily determined by the standard (and extent) of video processing required to match the input signal to the display. And even later it only matter if you sit close enough to know how to see the relatively slight differences anyway (Most people sit too far away to even see the difference between 720p and 1080p, where on earth difference can be much more visible)
Also keep contained by mind that picture quality is not simply a business of resolution. There are all sorts of artifacts (mosquito tumult, macroblocking, etc) and imperfections (edge jaggies, judder, etc) that can abase a picture. Not to mention that dynamic range, colour saturation and colour meticulousness (mainly characteristics of the display itself) are all more influential than resolution as determinants of perceived picture quality.
Irrespective of adjectives these other considerations, let's just focus on 720p vs 1080i. If your nurture a 1080p native HDTV or projector a 1080i signal it will probably make a contribution a superior picture relative to a 720p signal (more pixels), BUT if you are feeding some "720p" displays (1280 x 720 blind .... but not a 1366 x 768 screen (both of which qualify as 720p displays)) a 720p signal may in truth be better because it doesn't need any video processing, while a 1080i signal have to be deinterlaced and scaled to fit the peak (so does a 720p signal on a 1366x768 "720p" HDTV). The extra processing and interlaced scan can more than offset the advantages of the 1080 resolution.
That said, what type of source are you chitchat about? If the signal from an upconverting DVD player, HD DVD or Blu-ray player or the output from a activity console you can choose the input resolution to give you the best meeting to the native eyeshade resolution ... and this is often a defence of experimenting to see which compination of source output and display input gives the best picture. However, since HDTV can be broadcast surrounded by 720p or 1080i you don't get a choice.
Bottom dash ... you can't always predict which resolution will provide better picture quality, and for most those sitting far from the screen it won't issue because they are too far away to be able to see any difference anyway.
