Why is there a black and white little square in the corner of my T.V.?

On ITV (and other channels too) when the commercial break is approaching there is a little black and white square that appears in the top right corner of the screen. Why is there? What is it for?

Answer:
It's what's colloquially known as a cue dot. It lets everyone know when a commercial break is due. From the point of view of the TV company, it's used as a warning so they can start running the adverts on time. From the viewer's point of view, you can get ready to pause your video to remove the ads (if you're taping the program), or you can use it to tell you when it's time to brew up. Mine's tea with milk & 2 sweeteners, please! LOL!
It just means that the adverts are about to come on..some kind of warning ITV and channel 4 like to use! No idea why though, probably so we can get ready to get up to put the kettle on hehe
