I want to purchase a tv for playing video games what is the best way to go?
Answer:
for playing video games, go with a flat panel (either LCD or plasma). depending on the size you want it may limit you as plasmas range from 37"-60"+ and LCDs range from under 15" up to 52"+. you will pay more for a decent LCD in the 40"+ range over a plasma (currently less brands make LCDs that big causing less competition). if you sit within 8 feet, the recommended size is 37" or smaller. from 8-12 feet, a 37-46". beyond 12 feet, 46" or larger. both technologies have positives and negatives. the plasma tends to give you a truer color because the contrast ratio is better (blacks are blacker, whites are whiter), but it has a glass front which helps protect the panel yet causes it to run hotter, consume more power and be heavier. it also can have image burn-in if you pause the screen and leave the tv on for an extended period. LCD's dont have this problem, have a much brighter picture (which can cause your yellows, oranges, and reds to be too bright in your mid-level and low end models causing it to take away from the clariy in that area), consume less power (although only marginally), have no protection for the panel and weigh about 40% less in same size comparison to plasma (due to that glass screen of the plasma). If you choose plasma stick to pansonic and samsung (two of the top rated plasma TVs the past 2 years), the new models are mostly indistinguishable so find the best deal. With LCD, the BEST ones to go with are the Sony XBR, Sharp Aquos, or any Samsung (most of which that have a game mode that increases the refresh rate). If you have a PS3 or just want to be prepared for the future make sure you get a 1080p TV as it has twice as many pixels (read: clarity) to a normal HDTV. If those are out of your price range, look closely at other models, in LCDs you can tell a worse brand by the white looking blue-ish, feel the back to see which ones run hotter (not always a sign with LCD but can indicate), and as you move to an angle the picture gets brighter causing the color to start to fade. for plasmas, look for the same blueish white, the hotness (more of an indicator), and pay close attention to the color differences, and whether it is clearer from farther away or close up. Always look at each TV from the distance you will be looking at it from, not just up close when you walk by in the store.
It depends what size you want.
37" or smaller - It has to be LCD because the other technologies don't make them that small.
40-55" - Plasma is the best technology for video games. Fast response time.
60" or larger - get DLP because you really don't have a choice, plus DLP has the best image out of all the technologies. Downfalls is that it is rear projection, which means expensive lamp replacement ($300-$500) and narrow viewing angle and bulky footprint.
Plasma is the way to go! Lcd has a delay when you play fast moving video games.
