Receiving hd?

My cable company charges too much on HD service - about $16, and the installation tax for the STB is already $20, and that is too much! I own an HDTV that does NOT have a built-in HD tuner but have a built in ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuner. It cannot receive local HD broadcasts. Can I receive HD beside any other machine?

Answers:    Your statement is lone partially true.

Quote from the correlation you provided:

"Product Features

* Built-In HDTV Tuner: Add HD-capable antenna to receive over-the-air high-definition broadcasts, where available. Optional set-top box required for high-definition cable or satellite programming."

With an ATSC tuner -- unless you live where on earth the digital broadcasts are not ATSC signals or the ATSC signals are not HD -- you can pick up HDTV with a correct outside antenna which has be properly installed, possibly including an amplifier to boost the signal if you live far enough from the transmitters.

If you live surrounded by the US go to http://www.antennaweb.org and select the button Choose An Antenna. If will abet you locate those HD stations and tell you what description of antenna you need. Remember that HD stations ASSIGNED to channel 14 through 69 are UHF even if they are the HD channels of a VHF analog station assigned to channel 2 through 13. So if it says it is 50 miles away you necessitate an antenna that is pious for 50 or more miles in the UHF nouns (longer distance reception or more dB gain for UHF is always better and help when the signal is weak due to to a degree bad weather).

You can travel to DirecTV HD or Dish Network HD but you are going to pay them too. If adjectives you want is local channels surrounded by HD -- assuming that yours are -- then try the antenna. Why money for what you can get for free? But if you want HD satellite channel such as TNT HD, HBO HD and so on you have to settle up.

Now are you sure you did not try scanning for ATSC or QAM channel on your raw cable nouns without the box? You might be surprised what you can pick up if you are lucky ample to have unscrambled digital HD signals on your cable. Does not work near all cable systems but it is worth a try.
