Answers: I guess you mean 40 inches not 40 foot. :-)
In the 40 inch size you could capture either sympathetic of HDTV.
Plasma sets might have a better picture. They do use more power than the LCD set of matching size. You want to look around and get the best set you can find for your money. Now should be a correct time with after Christmas sale or New Year's sales coming. Contrary to what someone else said the Plasma have the stronger screen which is smaller number likely to be undermined by impact. But then both types should be treated next to care. If you hold small children who throw things you might want to keep this set mounted on a wall out of their manage. Same for the LCD.
LCD is the energy investor. For the Plasma sets need to look at the standby life consumption and make sure it is not more that a few watts. It is unlikely you requirement to worry around that with the LCD. LCD probably do concluding longer as long as they are not rough-housed or hit with Wii remotes that be thrown during playing a Wii sports game. With the LCD look at it surrounded by a store and see if you like the path it looks from all the angles that inhabitants might be viewing it from.
Sharp Aquos and Sony Bravia are the best rated sets out at hand. Get the highest contrast ratio you can afford contained by your price range and size of TV. Get HDMI inputs (at tiniest one or two) and Component video inputs with stereo audio inputs so you are primed for HDTV cable and satellite boxes or possibly that Blue Ray or HD-DVD video player or the gaming systems you might want to buy later (Playstation 3 or XBox 360).
For HDTV via antenna adjectives you need is a polite antenna and a HDTV tuner built in (ATSC for US, Freeview or DVB for UK). For HDTV via cable you any need ATSC and QAM tuners for the US (might work) or the cable company's HD box beside the HDMI connection or Component video and Stereo Audio nouns. For HDTV via satellite box you need a HD satellite box installed and the correct dish as powerfully as the HDMI connection or Component & audio nouns as with the cable box.
A 40" you would be retrieve to get any. I think when you bring back over 50" that the plasma is better. I think up to that point LCD is better. The 40" kingdom is the grey area. I enjoy a 37" Vizio LCD and its awesome.
