What would impose a black square to cover the peak of my tv?

This started suddenly, the tv is probaly 12 years old, never a problem. Today a black square showed up covering most of the eyeshade. After changeing channels is will show up respectively time in roughly speaking 5 seconds. Is it fixable or is it trashed?

Answers:    Sounds to me close to the 'text' format of closed caption is turned on. Some tvs hold a CC button on the remote, others you have to move about into the men to turn it off.
