She is advocate buying a new "HDTV". Not a problem if it's worth the $$$$$ to you. Personally I conjecture a $20 converter will be just fine. It should furnish me DVD like point while watching free broadcast TV. Sounds like my impression of an "upgrade". By the time the old TV burns out, the price of HDTVs will be more to my affection.

DTV - tv with a tuner to receive digital broadcasts

HDTV - a DTV that can show a highly developed resolution picture than the old TVs be capable of.

"HD antenna" (in the US) - Marketing hype, if your matured antenna gives honest analog reception, you probably don't need a investigational antenna. Every TV antenna is a "HD antenna"
Digital Broadcast will completely take over within February of 2009...so you still have sometime to upgrade your TV if you want, no free broadcasting isnt over of late upgrading to digital....and as far as what digital is...basically your basically looking at a much much better picture when compared with regular analog...I significantly recommend upgrading your TV...the picture is amazing even with simply an antenna!

(Also you can do what the above answerer put.....but upgrading your TV is worth it if you watch alot of TV)
