P means that respectively line is drawn in the order of 60 times a second (120 on better TVs). I means that every every other chain is drawn each second or the peak refreshes 30 times a second (60 times a second on a better TV).
So, P have smoother pictures and I has sharper similes. Its a toss up, but I would go beside the I (as in 1080i) for the sharper descriptions.
