You would have to define "big" when asking for the difference between 720p and 1080i (1080p is supposed to be even better). An earlier poster claimed 150% between the two. That simply is not accurate. 720p is progressive scan and 1080i is interlaced scan. Technically, the 1080i is supposed to provide somewhat more detail, but I would bet that few people, in a double blind test, could pick which is which. His math is off as well... if everything else were equal, the 1080i would only be a 33.3% improvement, far from 150%. 1080p is a noticeable improvement over the two, but not, by any means, a "big" difference.

I believe that there is a big difference between 720 and 1080i. There is also a difference between 1080i and 1080p. If you are willing to spend enough money on and HD TV to get a 720, you might as well spend the extra to get the 1080. You are buying a HD TV over a standard tv because you care about picture quality. You want the best picture quality so pay for a 1080. I wouldn't recommend getting a 1080p unless your rich. The 1080i is much more mainstream with most movies/video games only supporting up to 1080i. Only a select few applications use the 1080p format. Hope this helps!
Yes there is..1080 has 360 MORE LINES of resolution to provide MORE detail..
360 is Half of 720, so a 1080 TV will provide 150% resolution...actually its better to do it this way..
720 has 66% of the resolution that 1080 has...
And when you think about it, isn't that WHY you're going Hi Def? Tired of the old Low Definition 480 Lines of resolution?
Want a darn good TV that's reliable and 1080 native resolution, and costs only $900? Buy the Hitachi 51F59...it's CRT Projection, the TV can last up to 18 years with evening/weekend viewing or maybe 10 if it's up to 18 hours a day..
It has plenty of Hi Def connectors, and comes with a Digital tuner so you can watch TV when they shut down the transmitters in 2009.
Better yet, the technology has been around for years, and doesn't suffer from Lamps burning out every 2-3 years for $250 to $300 per Lamp!
It depends on the screen size you are looking for. For anything over 37", 1080 is definitely a noticeable improvement.
