Are the new hdtvs compatible with secam, pal, and any other of those broadcasting systems?

will a tv bought in japan, germany or australia work in the united states? i know sdtvs dont.

No they are not. That would be too easy :-)

USA and Canada has ATSC (perhaps Mexico as well)
Japan is close to ATSC but not exactly (I think)
Europe goes with DVB
