Who is the worst TV manufacturer?
Answer:
Of the "name brands", Plillips/Magnavox.
Sylvania...I prefer Mitsubishi
Sylvania
the last one who pissed you off.
I'd have to say that any "off-brand" or "el cheapo Wal-Mart special" TV would be the worst one to buy. When you buy them and take them home they will play pretty much like any other model.
The problems happen when the TV breaks for the first time; this is where you'll finally learn the difference between a cheap brand and a major brand. The major brand manufacturer will have authorized repair centers in or near your town, and they will be able to get all the electronics diagrams, tools and parts they need to fix your TV (especially if it's under warranty). The repair will take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the problem.
If you got the cheap "no-name" brand then your experience may be a lot different: the cheap manufacturers usually don't do as good of a job on supplying parts and diagrams, so even IF the shop can repair it it will likely take *MUCH* longer. I've seen TV's spend 2 or 3 months in the shop just for this reason alone.
Bottom line: stay FAR away from the cheap no name brands, or you'll regret it later.
Sylvania
Okay, the majority of users here say Sylvania. The fact is, Sylvania is just a trademark now, not a name brand. Sylvania is actually built by Funai. If you want to avoid ANY Funai product (which I suggest you do), you must then stay away from Funai, Symphonic, Sylvania, some models of Zenith/LG, some models of Emerson, some models of Philips/Magnavox (who used to own Sylvania). I usually look at the UL listed number for Funai (whatever that number is) if any of the other names you are looking at use the same UL listed number, it's built by Funai. This is also a good way to find OEM stuff that's made for no-name companies. For instance J.C. Penney's used to use Matsushita (Panasonic) for their VCR equipment. I have even seen Emerson stuff built by Mitsubishi. If there is even a doubt of who built it, look at the UL listed number and try to find the same number from a name brand piece. I can tell you now, Toshiba direct view TVs are made by Orion, for instance. So the name is not always a good point of reference. Those UL listed numbers will tell the story every time, if you look at them and use them. You will need to look at the rear of the item, but if you are like me, you will not buy something you cannot look at thoroughly.
funai and all it's baby companies, rca is a bad one, mitsub and zenith from the 90's(crt issues).
