Does standard cable alwasys look horrible on HDTV?

My mom got her HDTV today and I hooked it up for her (she have standard 480i cable) and it looked worse than normal, is this usual? I hooked up my brothers video games and they look somewhat better but not by much her TV is 720p and Im not an expert on this so whats up?

Answers:    first, a HDTV needs a HD source (digital cable box or digital sit receiver or dvr or etc). if you plug the regular cable directly into the TV, 480i programs will look horrible. some HDTV's enjoy an internal digital tuner but I can't confirm the quality. and HD TV's do not upconvert 480i to 720p.

second, ensure she have DIGITAL programming from her cable company. analog signals/over the air signals won't look great. to bring the best use of her new TV, your mom requests to ask her cable company to upgrade to all DIGITAL programming. almost adjectives TV studios have a digital signal, even if its a 480i signal. manufacture sure the cable box is a DIGITAL CABLE box not the old one.

third, the level of the cable is important. for the best HD picture, you have need of HDMI cables connected to the HDTV from her cable box/receiver source. even regular 480i TV over a HD cable will look better but inferior a 720p TV channel.
If you're hooking up regular cable to an HDTV, it will look really doomed to failure. I suggest your mom get HD because original cable will never look good on her hot TV.
