The instructions read that I'm to use a computer-like cable to directly hook-up the montior to the satellite box. There is no place on our directv satellite box to do this. We also bought a super "surge protector" that our TV power line is plugged into.

your new Sony should support HDMI, which the directv should also have! I hope you have the HD version of the directv box!
If your Sony only has DVI you need a tiny little 30 buck or less adapter to convert DVI to HDMI.
If your Sony is more of a monitor than a tv, and doesn't support audio, you need a good stereo too.
Your LCD monitor probably has a HDMI inputs. If you don't have the HD receiver from direct tv then it may not have an hdmi output. You'll have to upgrade the receiver. Also, If you didn't purchase an hdmi cable when you bought the monitor, you may need to do so seperately.
