I call for a key primer on connecting TV-video components.?

I recently bought a hi-def tv, a DVD recorder, and I hold a new cable box. I used to be pretty handy hooking up cable, but now I'm completely baffled. The problem seem to be the hi-def. What is a component cable, HDMI, DVI, etc.
One basic problem is my tv does't own an HDMI connection, but I would also similar to to understand the whle system.
Any links to a simple descritpion of tis undamaged process

Component cable (red, green, blue) from your DVD recorder to your TV. It is the best video output your DVD recorder can deliver. The singular difference between HDMI and Component is the signal sent over the component cable is compress through the cable, HDMI is uncompressed, and better quality. My experience contained by hooking up HDTV's has shown me little, if no difference between component and HDMI.

HDMI of late is easier to hook up and looks cleaner.
