Answers: Digital TV on cable is surrounded by a format called QAM. There are three kind of tuners that TVs can have-NTSC (analog), ATSC (OTA digital) and QAM ( cable digital). Many sets, especially older ones, do not own QAM tuners. All new TVs hold NTSC and ATSC. Some also have QAM. Your gf dad's TV have QAM. Therefore, it displays the digital signals (including HDTV) that the cable company is "broadcasting" unencrypted-like the local standard channels-CBS, NBC Etc. Your TV does not have a QAM addressee, so it only receive the analog cable channels.
When you procure the HD box from the cable company, you'll get them too. You could consider buying a QAM tuner and not getting a cable box if you don't contemplation about the encrypted channel like HBO. Many DVD recorder include a QAM tuner and could be used for this purpose.
