Is it possible to fix the v-hold or h-hold on a TV?

I remember tv's used to have a v-hold and h-hold adjustment. do they still have that? my tv has just a really bright line running across the center of the screen, if i press the "menu" button you can actually see the picture change inside the stripe across the screen. the strip of light is about 1/8 inch wide. it runs horizontally. does anyone know whats wrong.i've already bought a new tv to replace it, i just hate to throw away a tv if i might be able to fix it.

Answer:
The problem is with your vertical output circuit. Either the output I.C. chip (which would be most common), or anything around there, even a bad connection. A 1 year old set would be worthwhile to have a repairman check out & give an estimate, depending on the size & cost of it new. You're right, I'm sure there is a lot of electronic equipment thrown to the dump which could have been fixed cheaply.
