1080p 42" HDTV or 47" 720p HDTV? Which one and why?
Answers: I would go for the 47 720p if they are duplicate price. 1080p is just a complex resolution, but 720p has a particularly crisp picture, and the difference is very slight.
1080p 42'' HD TV because it will hold better graphics than the 720p. Sure the 720p is bigger but just by a few inches. I would sacrifice a few inches for better graphics.
The 1080p one. The HDTV compaines refer to it as "True HD," because it have way more detail than, for example the 720p. So if you're going for an HD experience instead of a tv upgrade the 1080p's for you.
1080p and 720p are 2 different HDTV standard, both will furnish FANTASTIC quality but the 1080p will tender you that much more better picture than the 720p, so I say step with the 1080p. But I'll speak about you this, you WILL NOT experience the HD picture on cable unless you have an HD cable box which outputs controlled HD channels, and for a DVD player, to some extent than getting the $500 HD DVD player just buy a 1080p HDMI upconverting DVD player, they are ALOT cheaper and will grant you the FULL HD experience on normal DVD movies. (Upconverting DVD players convert your your common DVDs to an HD Level, and outputs it to your TV), with HDMI DVD players you also inevitability a HDMI cable which ranges from $30-$100 (depending on length) and your TV must be HDMI compliant.
At this TV size, the 1080p improvement within resolution is definitely discernible. The trend is toward 1080p, and I bet in a year or two it will be rugged to find 720p sets at all.
All the comments above aside I would speak the 720p for 2 reasons.
One, near a 42" TV you are barely going to see the difference. They say it take 40" to tell between the 2 and you are hardly there.
Second, the ONLY point in 1080p for a while is any HD DVD or Blue Ray. If you don't have any of those then you're not going to be watching true 1080p anyway so what's the point?

Without a doubt, go and get the 47" 720p! Here's my reasoning. How far are you going to sit from the television? Once you are further than 9 foot away from your HDTV, the human eye cannot tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. The 720p have a max viewing distance of 14ft. Therefore, you can set up your large 47" blind, sit back, and relish the picture anywhere further back than 9 foot, and the picture will look exactly the same as the 1080p. I've be debating on televisions but I can't find a 720p explicitly 47". It seems close to the opposite on adjectives sites. The 720p is the 42" and the 1080p is the 47". Hmm... I'd like to see a association to a 47" 720p!
