Answers: A HD-Ready TV is one that lacks a TV tuner - which is why it doesn't hold an input for your cable.
So, you will need to plug the cable into something beside a TV Tuner in it - similar to a VCR (the manual goofed - DVD players don't own tuners) or maybe a DVD-Recorder. You can also win a cable box from your cable provider for $5/mo. Note that if you want HD cable channels (like Discovery Channel HD) you will want their cable box anyways. Or, if you switch to satellite, they'll give you a tuner box that you will connect to your TV.
In broad, use the best possible cable connection available. From lowest to utmost these are:
* composite video - yellow RCA cable for video, red&white RCA cable for audio (stereo only) - almost everything supports this but isn't the best quality picture out in attendance.
* S-Video - black round connector with 3 pins sticking out of it, and like red&white audio cables. Much better edges and black level.
* Component Video - set of 3 RCA cables (red, green, blue) for video, red&white audio cable for stereo. MUCH better picture than S-video. Also *required* for HDTV. Check your TV's manual for what resolutions are supported (usually, 720p, 1080i and SOMETIMES 1080p)
* HDMI - single connector for both video AND audio. Unlike the others, HDMI can also pass surround sound information, as well as plain feeble stereo sound. HDMI also supports HD resolutions. Most newer TVs own at least one HDMI port. This will be the topical standard going forward.
* TOSLINK/optical audio/Digital COAX - as the name imply, these are audio cables. These are used to connect things close to a DVD player to your surround sound system if you aren't using HDMI for audio. It is possible to connect a device's video cords and audio cords to separate places - for instance, my DVD player's video go to the TV, but the audio goes to my heir so I can use the surround sound. I don't even use the red&white stereo cable at all.
