If I buy a flat screen TV in France will it work in the UK?

No. France use SECAM broadcast system. We use PAL-I.

It'll work with a freeview box via the SCART socket though, I guess.

I bought a flat screen recently in a branch of Auchan in Perpignan for my holiday home and the specs seemed fine in that it was PAL compatible (UK standard format) as well as SECAM (French) and NTSC (AMerican) check the handbooks or go to the proposed manufacturers website first as a double check
It might and it might not it depends.you can but articles in France that are cheaper than they are in UK. If it is a french company that sells french articles then there could be a snag. You might have to go back to France and tell them that it wont work..they could say "What wont work in UK will work here".
