If your laptop has a (digital video) DVI video card you can purchase a DVI-HDMI cable.
I enjoy a Samsung 32" and have my laptop connected this process.

vga is the standard monitor nouns on laptops and desktops. s video also works but it doesn't look as great. aside from that if you do have a DVI out put on you laptop which are not standard, you will want the DVI to HDMI and will get the peak quality signal
