If you get the apple tv you can convert your dvds to the quicktime format and then the apple tv will download them over the network to its harddrive and you can watch them on your tv.
All you really need is a video card that has either composite or s-video out. If you have a higher end video card you can even do HD out to your tv.

All you really need is a video card with the video out capabilities and the cable to connect it to the tv. From there it should just be changing the TV/Video on the tv until your picture shows up.
