Not have Cable TV, (just regular TV plugged into the wall, for local channels) how soon will it be antiquated?

Is Feb. 2009 the cut off date, past needing a converter box, rendering regular TV reception useless short signing up for cable TV(which I plan to avoid).

What is the difference between Analog & Digital TV?

When it breaks.

On 2/17/2009 almost all of the matured analog TV broadcasts will end. But you will still know how to use your old TV.

There are converter boxes for over-the-air TV broadcasts that convert the bright digital (still free) TV broadcasts to something your old TV understand.

Starting in Jan 2008 the US system will have a coupon program so you can buy a couple of them at more or less $20 each.
These will include a up to date remote control and can receive all the antediluvian analog and new digital OTA broadcasts.

If you return with good UHF (analog tube 14-69) signals now, you should be capable of use your old antenna beside the new digital broadcasts. If you grasp marginal UHF reception, you will probably need a better TV antenna.

Analog TV be designed based on the technology than be available in the unsettled 1930's. Digital TV is based on the electronic technology that be available in the unsettled 1990's.

The digital TV signals require advanced computer chips to receive them, but the new technology allows TV's to be built that hold a much cleaner more detailed picture and more channels can be squeezed into one and the same frequencies that the analog signals take up.

Cheat Sheet
--------------------------------------...
Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = "Analog TV"

New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = "Digital TV" = DTV

Digital signals used on some cable systems = QAM

OTA = "Over the Air" = stuff you carry through your TV antenna
