Did the electronics industry develop HDTV because tvs were lasting too long?

My conventional picture tube tv (purchased in 1987) lasted 20 years before it starting showing any signs of wear.

Answer:
Everyone has their definition of better. To some people, "better" is when a product last long. To some people, "better" is when it looks better. To some people, "better" is when it has more features.

HDTV would fall into the category of "it looks better". A tube TV would fall into the category of "last long".

The bottom line is that traditional tube TVs cannot produce high resolution images. LCD, plasma and DLP TVs can. With any new technology, there are always disadvantages compared to older technology.

But, no one is forcing you to buy a new TV. Go ahead and continue to buy tube TVs. They will be selling them for at least a few more years. Stock up, while supplies last!
