Can you examine regular dvds on a HD Plasma tv using a regular dvd player?

I am planning on a buying a HD Plama tv today but I was only just curious...

Answers:    Yes. You will want to connect the DVD player to the TV using component video cables, and set the DVD player to 'progressive scan' to attain the best possible picture.

As a bonus, the TV will upscale ("stretch") the picture, giving your existing DVDs an immediate, near-HD aspect boost.

You might want to consider a DVD player with a built-in upscaler, which can be have for about $100-200. Like the TV, these players will boost your DVDs to near-HD level. They also allow you to connect to your TV using HDMI cable, which gives you a better picture.

Either process, do not be fooled into buying a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray HD player. These formats are still very immature, and are competing with respectively other. The players - and their new HD discs - are much more expensive than commonplace DVDs. Some movies will only be released within one format or the other, so buying a player now will also way making a choice which movies you will want to watch. Eventually the HD video bazaar will settle down. Maybe in a year or so.
yes but it wont be contained by hi def. go buy a bluray or hddvd player if you want to scrutinize hi def movies. get hi def service from your cable or dish provider aswell.
You can.

But HD is with the sole purpose as cool as HD Content.

A DVD player, even an upscaling one will look generic on an HD Plasma.

Plasma does look better than LCD on Standard Definition feeds.

I am in reality a backer of Plasma over LCD as powerfully in vocabulary of image standard. LCD gets push because of power consumption and individuals want to be more Green - which is fine. But they shouldn't be so manipulative about it.
Spend for a time extra money and buy an upconvert dvd player and an HDMI cable to hook it up. This will make adjectives of your standard dvds look close to HD. A good upconvert player runs around $100. Its worth the money.
