Turn off power to plasma tv when not in use to save electric $?

our electric bill has gone up since we got our Hitachi 42" plasma TV. Does it use power at a low level even when not in use? would it damage the set if I plugged it into a power strip, and turned the strip off (no power) when not in use?

Answer:
Your set uses very little power when off, just enough to keep the standby circuitry active. I strongly recommend not to switch it off with a power strip. I would look for other reasons for the increase in the power bill. Check your actual usage on the bill, and sur-charges. Compare it with your previous usage. The amount of power used by a television set of any size is trivial compared to other major household appliances (range, clothes dryer, electric water heater, ect.).
I don't think that leaving something plugged in uses electricity, if you think it does call your electric company and ask them exactly how much it would use if it was plugged in all the time.
my power bill has gone up 1/4 since we bought our panasonic plasma 52 " hd,t.v, i would not disconnect your power source when not in use, it may damage yur t.v. i dont think it would help your power bll much,
When your set is off, but "plugged in," it uses around .1-.3 watts. Compare to a 100W bulb and it's nothing. The specs that came with your set should tell you how much electricity it uses, or get on-line from Hitachi customer assistance.
