Does the TV have to be switched on, or on standby or plugged in for the Licence Detector van to catch you?

Answer:
There are two solutions to your problem how to avoid licence fee !!

( 1 ) Rent your TV, some rental company's pay your licence fee

( 2 ) Move to Australia , no licence fees for Tv
I reckon it doesnt matter whether its on or off, apparently if you have bought a tv on credit going back a certain amount of years they know that too. You cant even say its a black and white set any more for goodness sake!
i wouldnt bother trying to get around paying for your tv licence, as they WILL find you. its better just to pay it and get on with your life, rather than having to canstantly avoid turning your tv on
no they cant detect you if everything is off (no stanby)

but the minute you switch it on, your f***ed.

just pay the fee and get on, otherwise you wont get to watch anything without being paranoid.
disconnect everything and the Ariel no Ariel no signal so I'm told
For a detector van - if they are still used - you would have to be watching the TV. BUT details of all TV's bought are sent to the TV license 'office' who check the purchaser's name against their database of license owners. Then it's just a matter of time before they come to get you! Penalty for no license (in UK) - £1000 fine plus you still have to buy the license!
It has to be actually switched on and tuned to BBC for the BBC Detector van to catch you.

Technically, the van can tell exactly which channel the TV is switched on to but I'm guessing they can only legally do something about it if they catch you watching BBC - the electronic explanantion is a little complicated as to how they can tell which channel you are watching...but trust me, they can.

Good luck.
With modern technology we have many ways of catching the TV users who wish to avoid paying their license fee, this being another one.

Consider yourself nicked
As long as you have equipment that can receive or be made to receive terrestrial signals you can be prosecuted. By equipment it means a tv set a video recorder that can receive signals or a dvd that can any device of any nature they will have you. Don't think that even if its unpluged and put away you are excempt you are not. When sky was just starting up some guy disabled his tv set so it could not receive terrestrial signals. They tried to prosecute him but failed. They then had the wording of the law changed to any set or equipment that can receive terrestrial signals. Their computer now lists all adresses that do not have a current valid licence. If they suspect you of using equipment they will seek a search warrent. Hows that for legal extortion. Say thank you bbc for being to lazy to compete for you revenue. But why compete when you can use the goverment to extort money for you.
