Trying to connect laptop to tv but laptop doesn't recognise it is connected?

when i try and connect my laptop to my tv with a yellow rbg cable and go to the correect channel on tv and then press function and F8 it say presentation mode is off and no external device is attached, anyhelp would be great, it is a dell 6300 laptop with tv out and a matsui widescreen 28" tv.

Answer:
I have the same laptop and a 50" TV. I use a Belkin Pro Series cable, the number on it is E101344-C Style 2919. Don't know if that makes a difference, but I do remember choosing that cable as it was designed for particularly large TV's. I didn't have a problem, just plugged one end into the laptop and the other end into the TV, the TV has a "monitor-type" connection socket which is what I plugged in to.
I then got the right channel up on the TV and pressed & held function and F8 and that worked for me.
I know this isn't much help, sorry, but hopefully this will confirm at least that you have the right connection, or cable etc.
GO to Control Panel - Display - follow instructions.
Have you tried going to: Display properties in control panel , Settings - Advanced - Displays and select TV? or try a different cable
i have no idea but good luck finding and answer to your question
