It is small with a built in vhs player. For some reason the screen keeps going all weird.. I can only see the outside 1cm perimeter, the rest is all black. If I turn if off and back on it's fine but them 5 minutes later almost the whole screen is black again.

Shut off Closed captioning, it is on a text mode.
is it old? usually if you play it too much that's when it starts to die or dust..
Is it when you watch TV or play a VHS or both? If it's when you play a VHS then you need to clean it. Buy a VHS head cleaner from an electronics store. If it's the TV then I'm not sure what's wrong.
Sounds like the tube is dying... For a small unit like that, taking it in to get service (unless under warranty) will cost more than a new one...
Go down to Costco or Wall-Mart or wherever and pick up a new unit (but this time- splurge and get the built-in DVD)...
