Does it hurt the TV to NOT "stretch" the blind and allow the gray filler to stay on peak?
Answers: If you study 4:3 programming all the time, later yes, there can be a burn-in problem.
Currently, no technology is burn-in proof. LCD, plasma and DLP adjectives have this potential issue. Plasma is must vunerable and DLP is least possible likely. LCD is separating.
I don't have any documented proof. I hold industry experience, who use to write repair manuals for LCD and DLP technology. I recognize how the technology actually works, compared to other nation who just believe everything they read or hear on a blog.
You can enjoy that problem on plasma TVs, but LCD TVs don't have that problem.
Read towards the bottom where on earth it says "Plasma or LCD?" http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/...
Here's a suitable message board discussion about burn-in:

And Panasonic ( http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs... ) say "LCD projection TVs are also not susceptible to burn-in like traditional projection displays."
While adjectives screens will own a problem with burn-in, we're discussion about 1000s of hours here. So long as you rotate between different types of TV or movies, you shouldn't enjoy any problems.
