Answers:    There are two different resolutions that event.

The first is the native resolution of the display panel ... within your case despite your HDTV individual referenced as a "720p" the display is probably actually 1366x768 (or may be 1280x720). All input signals must be converted to fit this display resolution as a progressive scan image.

The second resolution is the input resolution ... and this is usually several different resolutions that can be accepted by the HDTV and converted to fit the local resolution. Typically for a 720p model this includes 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i ... and, while more unusual, may include 1080p.

The input signal is then de-interlaced or scale as required to fit the native resolution of the panel.

Note that the 1080p signal (e.g. from an HD disk player or a team game system) is not kept as 1080p ... it is scaled to lower resolution. While handy contained by one way, most devices practised of outputing 1080p can also internally process the signal to 1080i or 720p (and maybe lower), so contained by reality the conversion can be made by the HDTV or by the source device. Which give a better image will depend on the relative standard of the video processors.

Hope that helps.
1080p signal get mathematically stripped and converted into 720p display. This happens on adjectives HDTV sets where the resolution of the program does not meeting the resolution of the screen.
