High Definition Multimedia Interface
It's one of the several standards for High Def.
HDMI is an acronym for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a patented (by Silicon Image, Inc.), DIGITAL cable that is designed to carry both digital audio and video signals between digital a/v components and displays in a home theater application. HDMI technology has been used for about three years now, and there have actually been three different generations: 1.1, 1.2, & 1.3. They are all backward compatible. HDMI 1.2 is widely considerd a standard feature of all new hd displays and sources today. The 1.3 is just now appearing on some of the higher-end or higher-performance components and displays. The capabilities of the 1.3 assure that it WILL BE THE STANDARD TRANSFER CABLE FOR ALL HOME THEATER USE FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE. Our highest performing and most demanding digital a/v sources only use a small fraction of it's true capability.
