Can I play HD video from my computer using my HDTV?

I downloaded some videos which claim to be in HD. They are an hour long each and over a gigabyte in size - so I'm assuming they really are HD. However when I play them in Windows Media Player - they are definitely not HD. Is this because I am connected through VGA? Would an HDMI/DVI connection allow me to transfer a true HD signal from my computer to my TV? Or do I also need some special software?

Answer:
Get the version of Windows known as XP/Media Center
