What's the cheapest way to get freeview TV in a house with no roof aeriel?

We have a TV, can't get NTL in our street nor do we wish to go for Sky as £15 a month is their cheapest rate.

Can we get (perfect) freeview through a standalone TV booster aeriel that sits on top of the TV or would we need to fit a roof aeriel?

Answer:
This may seem obvious but I get good reception with both loft aerial and an ordinary indoor.

Why not buy or borrow a cheap indoor first and see how you get on.

Loft aerial wii give the best reception

Also look at other houses in the area to see where the aerials are placed yours wants to be placed at that side of the house if possible.

.
Depends on your area. I think its really unlikely you'll get perfect Freeview without a roof aerial. You can get *some* of the channels from Sky with only a one-off payment: see http://www.freesatfromsky.com/
It depends where you live. Try pointing your aerial towards ally pally or Crystal palace, if it doesn't work then the answer is no. The closer you live to either, with a direct line of site is advantageous.
a small indoor ariel
check ur coverage on bbc.co.uk/digital, just enter ur postcode, but im sure either way that u will need a decent roof ariel.
The optimum way to get the best Freeview reception is to use either a high gain roof aerial or a very good loft aerial. However, it's important to realise that an aerial booster will have no positive effect on a Freeview box. This is because a booster is designed to boost an analogue signal, not a digital one. I suggest you borrow a Freeview box from a friend and try your aerial with it. Then you can decide what to do next.
I'd borrow a box and indoor aerial first, to check that you can get a signal. Then shop around for a cheap box. Save your money for the best indoor digital aerial you can buy, make sure it comes with a signal booster, and consider getting it professionally fitted.

Hi

I just bought a freeview box last weekend and bought an indoor digital aerial for £19.99 from Argos and it works fine. It cuts out intermittently which is what you would expect from an indoor aerial (a quick wiggle to pick up stronger signal and its fine) but it definitely picks up freeview and I have all the channels. The aerial is silver and it boosts signal up to 40db and its by a company called One for All. Try it and see. I was well pleased considering people make it sound like you can NEVER have freeview if you don't have an outdoor aerial. My hubby says that it cuts intermittently because its a digital signal..don't really care cos it means I can watch CSI in peace while he is watching rubbish football.
