Is this fact about televisions true?
Answer:
Everyone will always want to get the "best-bang-for-the-buck", especially when we're talking thousands of bucks!
You defiantly want to stick with a name brand, and getting a long warranty is fine, but be carefull of some of the "pitch-points". For example, you're talking about 1200:1 contrast ratios. The human eye cannot see beyond 800:1. Even if someone wants to try and fight that point with me, each manufacturer uses different testing methods/ conditions to come up with the results... some are honestly trying to give accurate numbers, others...
Go find the best (go look at the picture- ignore the numbers), name brand TV, from a reputable store (one that will let you change sources, change settings, etc. Some stores will tweak the contrast, color, etc to make one TV look worse than the one next to it- cause they want to sell the one next to it!) for your budget...
Hope this helps...
For a 32" LCD you can expect to pay about $900-1300 retail for a new LCD HDTV, with an additional $200 or so for the extended warranty.
The prices you quoted seem about right. When Dell first started manufacturing LCD they had a high defect rate, but I've heard that this has improved.
For good performance in your price range, consider Toshiba or Sharp. Sony is good quality, but you are paying a premium for the sony brand. Toshiba will offer comparable quality for less. I'd stay away from lesser known brands, most of them are manufactured by Chinese licensee importers with lower quality components.
With the warranty, either of the options you mentioned sounds ok, if you shop around you might even be able to find a better deal. Just remember to use decent quality cabling (component or HDMI from a reputable manufacturer) as it will significantly affect your tv's performance.
I will just say this, don't buy it from Amazon.com or any other on-line place. How would you get it serviced ? That's the thing with buying big ticket items on-line. SERVICE !! Go to an electronics store that sells mostly TVs, and services them. Mine would be serviced here, in my home, as part of the deal ! Those are the things you need to think about. It may cost a bit more, but, in the end you will save money, because a better quality TV won't break down all the time. Go LCD & go Sony, Panasonic, or Samsung., in that order, and you won't regret it. Plasma & DLP are trash !
