What lasts longer...lcd or plasma? and which requires more maintenance costs?
Answer:
When my wife and I bought our 40" LCD television, we asked about plasma, and the guy over at Best Buy told us that plasma was mostly for gamers and the such, and that LCD was better for casual television and movie watching, and that LCD would last longer without problems than plasma.
Hope that helps.
I think plasma's have a gas tube in them that go out and have to be replaced often
LCD has a longer life, around 25-30 years. Plasma can last up to 16-20 years with the proper setup. I suggest using some sort of power saver (monster makes the best) can improve a 12 yr tv to 16-17
Im a electronics enthusiast, I can tell you from my personal experience that Plasma hdtvs have the best picture and because of recent technology improvements, Plasma tv no longer suffer from the dreaded "burn-in". LCD sets dont look that great because of their low contrast ratios, LCD's usualy have 1500:1 cantrast ratio while Plasma has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. New Plasmas last around 30,000-40,000 hours
which is many years.
I recommend a Plasma.
Definitely LCD would last longer in terms of MTF.
I would expect Plasma requires more maintenance cost if one of the little plasma tubes burns out.
LCD will last longer. Despite the claims of some plasma TV makers, they can still have problems with burnins, though less so than originally. They are only better for gamers in that in the past, they had a much faster refresh rate than LCD's, which is not a big issue with LCD anymore, but because of the burn-in issue, plasma is not that good for video games. Plasma uses more electricity and run hotter, which is not great for the electronic components. There is no way it is going to last for 20 years, and LCD is not going to last for 30. These tv's will not last as long as old CRT tv's that lasted you 10-15 years, the technology is too young and there are too many components that could break.
LCD will last longer. As to maintenance costs, either one is going to cost an arm and a leg if you have to pay to fix them.
