Burning smell from the TV?

Last night , the Tv was fine, watching football at 3 in the morning. This morning, not a dickie out of the TV, black screen, intermitting hissing and then a burning smell. I unplugged it, set it up on the table, plugged it in again and then a continious hissing noise upon which i unplugged it. Do you think it can be fixed, its rather old, over 10 years. Is it cheaper to get a new one? Anyone have any clues what the problem might be. thanks

Answer:
It sounds like a flyback transformer has failed or is failing. Probably would be better to get a different set. Do not plug this thing in again, you may have some real problems.
Might be better to replace it with a used one from your local Salvation Army Thrift store. This TV should not have failed after only ten years.
Either that or you have a really old wood burning TV. These were used before electricity was invented by Al Gore and they can still be found being used by the Amish. They were replaced by the kerosine powered TV and the wind up ones. Later came the early electric monocolor TV sets which came before the black and white TV sets. These TV sets had only one color, just black. Needless to say they did not catch on, so another color was added so there would be a picture to go with the sound. Later on, after colors had been invented by Al Gore, the color TV was developed. The early models used quickly eraseable color markers, the later ones were digital.
Glad to help with the history of TV.
If its that old I would say trash it and get a new one. It may be cheaper to fix it but, with how cheap tvs are now and how old your tv is, I would get a new one
Doesn't matter what is wrong with it. Buying a new one is cheaper than having it fixed. Unfortunately, electronics are priced too cheaply to make it worth repairing them. Landfills are filling up with VCR's, TV's, DVD Players as we speak. The problem you are having sounds like a circuit board with some fried components. Make sure you use surge protector with the new one.
It sounds like some components in the TV has started to melt. Time to get a new flat panel.
NO TV OVER 10 YEARS OLD IS WORTH FIXING, if you have any repair labor cost. Just diagnostics, without any parts or repair labor, would probably cost more than the old beater is worth.

If all you want is a TV set, without new technology or any bells and whistles, you can get a NEW CRT, around 27", with a tuner capable of processing the 2009 digital standard, for $300 or so. I doubt you could get yours repaired for much less, IF you could even get parts for it.
Your flyback transformer is faulty! Fairly simple to replace but may be expensive . Where you live will have a bearing on the repair cost , ( not everybody lives in the USA ) .
Wander in to a repair shop and ask how much to replace fly back transformer !!. Sorry can`t be more help.
Cheers Pete
