Not sure how you expect to be able to figure out what went out on the TV... You've most likely had a component failure in either the horizontal or power regulation circuits. It's totally repairable, but you need to figure out for yourself what it's worth (to you) to have it repaired. The part could cost up to $50.00, labor probably 125 - 175. Then maybe 50 more for pickup and delivery. So probably like 250 - 300 for the repair. Depends where you live also. Good luck
Odds are, it's toast and you need a new TV. If you're willing to take it to a repair spend around $75 to $100 dollars to find out *if* it can be repaired and are further willing to spend several hundred more if the answer is "yes", it might be worth the effort.
I recently had a 32" set with the same problem and it was cheaper to replace than repair.
Good luck!
This is common in crt tvs. Basically the tube is out in the back. My old Sony went for about 3 years before blanking out too, and the sound was not out. I recommend you get a new tv, because fixing it is not worth it.
How is your tv hooked up? If you are using your A/V inputs then maybe just your VIDEO (yellow) cable is bad & needs to be replaced. Otherwise it could be anything from bad connection in your filament circuit, which lights up your CRT , to component failure in the horizontal circuit to even vertical output circuit (you can't see a faint line running across the center of the screen can you?).
I think a 36" is worthwhile getting an estimate on.
