You're correct in that CRT displays are still capable of presenting better picture quality than LCD and Plasma screens, but the gap is narrowing. In particular, CRT is better at presenting true blacks. There are many LCD and Plasma displays that can present really good picture quality, but people involved in professional imaging often still depend on good old fashioned CRT. LCD and Plasma just simply can't provide the same image quality just yet.
If you ask me though, the power and space you save with LCD is still worth it. And keep in mind that the selection of HD capable CRTs is much smaller than that of LCD or Plasma. AND you can't find CRTs in as big of sizes as LCD and Plasma.
The problem isn't the TV, it's your input signal.
Eventually you will grow old and your eyes will go bad, and it won't matter.
You are comparing two different technologies. If you have an HD Plasma or LCD monitor and are feeding it a signal from cable TV or something like that, then it will look like crap. The reason it looks better on a CRT is because a CRT is generally smaller in size then what you can get it a Plasma or LCD and doesn't handle the high resolution so it tends to be more "forgiving" with low quality signals like cable TV or you could say is better coupled to the signals resolution. However, if you feed your new Sony a Hi-Def signal at 1080i or 1080p from a device like a Blu Ray or HD-DVD, then you will see it actually clear.
